Department of Housing Section 8 Waiting List Open

July 24, 2014

The Department of Housing has announced that it will open the waiting lists for the state Rental Assistance Program (RAP) and the state’s portion of the Section 8 (Housing Choice Voucher) program for a two-week period, beginning August 4 and ending August 18.  Applications for the waiting list will become available on August 4.

The waiting lists for these programs have been closed since 2007, so the reopening of the lists is a major event.  Eight thousand names will be chosen by lottery for placement on the list – 5,000 for Section 8 and 3,000 for RAP.   Please distribute the attached pre-publication notice widely to social services and other organizations, and please encourage them to distribute waiting list application forms widely to their clients when the forms become available on August 4.  The need is enormous – about 50,000 households submitted applications when these lists were last opened.  There is no reason to believe that the need is any less great now.
